Red Tape Reduction

The Province of New Brunswick is working to the reduce red tape in the building industry. This will better protect the public, provide improved service and create a more transparent and consistent regulatory environment for the design and construction industry.

Presently there are :

      • 12 District Planning Commissions, 40 municipalities and seven provincial government departments are involved in building permits and inspections
      • May have to visit as many as seven different offices
      • Quality of service varies with each jurisdiction
      • Each jurisdiction has its own rules, procedures, and application forms
      • Each jurisdiction has its own version of the NBC
      • We do not do a particularly good job of telling public/stakeholders what the rules are
      • No co-ordination provincially
      • No appeal procedure
      • Inspections types vary to no inspections

Building Safety Advisory Committee

The Province of  New Brunswick has formed the Building Safety Committee with a  mandate  to work with all stakeholders to create a provincial oversight function to regulate building codes and standards, including the design, construction and inspection of buildings. By developing a standard approach to codes, applications and inspections, the safety and quality of building construction in the province will be enhanced. The committee will also work on the development and presentation of a New Brunswick Building Code Act
